about

Abyss takes you on a journey across the cosmos to the other side of the galaxy. Living in space is our destiny as humans, exploring the galaxy and finding new and wonderful planets and civilisations.

This song has it's roots in many movies - 2001: A Space Odyssey, Hitchhikers Guide, Contact and Silent Running. Yet again it was something Tim Leary wrote about in The Intelligence Agents book, of human destiny being far beyond Earth. As Asimov said "The Earth is our kindergarten, but we can't stay in the kindergarten forever!"

Alice A. Bailey also wrote about our destiny being in the vicinity of Sirius.

lyrics

Abyss

There is a place we will be going
And it’s out into space our rockets glowing
Down behind us, they won’t blind us.

No hidden force to drag you down
It’ just a matter of course, leaving the ground
Far below us, they won’t know us.

Heading for a nearby constellation
Guided by electric computation.

Across the abyss we sleep in silence
Timeless bodies of bliss held in suspense
Of what we’ll find there, will they have minds there.

Awake to a dream warmed by a new sun
That has never been seen before by anyone
We’ll grow there the seeds we so there.

Living in a nearby constellation
Guided by our own imagination.

What are we waiting for
When there’s so much to explore????
They won't know us....

credits

from Real World, released April 1, 1982
- Jay... Nylon acoustic guitar, Lead Vocal, Backing Vocals, real Maxwin drum kit, Casio MT-30 keyboard.
- Paul Dengate... Electric lead guitar'
- Samantha Trenoweth... backing vocals.
- Ken Handley... Blonde Fender Fretless Bass guitar.

Notes:
- I love the way Paul's lead break starts off quite casual then builds and builds.

- there was one bad snare drum beat in the whole song, I think it was terribly out of time or something, I forget now. Paul sat with the recorder and I played the snare and he literally punched in on the track and out again between snare beats. This is back in analogue days before the ease of digital editing.
