about

Digital Dreamland exploded like the technology itself. The early 80's was completely overwhelming with more and more becoming available on a daily basis. It was a very exciting time, pre-internet.

The Tron movie came out in 1982 which was very much the inspiration for the song. Everything was exploding all at once and we hoped that the world wasn't next!

In its day the song was quite futuristic and ahead of its time capturing the mood of the day. Most of the sentiments are the same but the technology has moved light years ahead to gigabytes and Blue-ray.

lyrics

Digital Dreamland

Children with computer eyes
Reflect the bright electric skies
Where cities feed from satellites
A billion bits in megabytes.

Basic language on their lips
Crystallised in microchips
Beat the system, break the code
Save it, verify and load.

Living in a digital dreamland
Electrons flashing across the screen
We’re living in a digital dreamland
There’s still so much for us to dream…

We play our songs on laser disc
And face a guided missile risk
While businessmen with 10k watches
Calculate the cost of scotches.

Remote control of situations
Play the games or change the station
Set the microwave for dinner
Even mother is a winner.

Living in a digital dreamland
Electrons flashing across the screen
We’re living in a digital dreamland
There’s still so much for us to dream…

As knowledge spreads between us
And the truth begins to shine
Our microchips and floppy disks
May liberate our minds
Liberate your mind…

Living in a digital dreamland
Electrons flashing across the screen
We’re living in a digital dreamland
There’s still so much for us to dream…

Notes:
This is the second version of this song recorded later than 1983. I think it was done 10 years later in 1993 using the more sophisticated EPS 16+ keyboard but the essence of the song is the same.
