about

Real World is the story of conditioning. From the moment we are born we are programmed and packaged to fit into the system so we fulfil our destiny - by the 'vocational guidance counselor'!!!

They fill our heads full of such nonesense so we learn not to think for ourselves and they award us merit on the retention of that knowledge not for original thought.

And we end up as some robot worker in a mindless job and forgetting all about real happiness. And they call it the 'real world' with a 'real job' and a 'real life' when all we become are mindless worker-ants.

lyrics

Real World

When you started school they put you in a uniform
Read you out a list of rules, showed you how you must conform
'Cause that's the way life is in the 'real world'
You have to be prepared for living in the 'real world'.

Boys learned woodwork, girls do sowing,
It is so important to know you are going.

Worked your youth away learning useless facts by heart
Save it for a rainy day and if you pass they call you smart
And say that you are ready for the 'real world'
You're tailored to fit for living in the 'real world'.

Girls learned cooking, boys did rowing
It was so important to get where you were going.

But then you find that all this time
Was spent to bind your arms behind your back!
They put you in a straight jacket
Working for your pay packet
And you've got to build a reputation
To be a part of it all
It's such a dangerous occupation
Having your back to the wall
With nowhere to crawl.

Real world, real world, real world, real world, real world.

How do you think you do it
Staying all those years
At school looking up to your peers?
Were you really happy?
Are you happy now?
Do you think you'll ever be?
Do you know how???

And so you find that all this time
Was spent to bind your arms behind your back!
They put you in a straight jacket
Working for your pay packet
And you've got to build a reputation
To be a part of it all
It's such a dangerous occupation
Having your back to the wall
With nowhere to crawl.

Real world, real world, real world, real world!

credits

from Real World, released April 1, 1982
- Jay Moxham... Nylon acoustic guitar, Lead Vocal, Backing Vocals, real drum kit, Casio MT-30 keyboard.
- Paul Dengate... Electric rhythm guitar and production assistance.
- Ken Handley... Blonde Fender Fretless Bass guitar.

Jay Notes:
- The drums are real! The drumming for second half of the chorus "build a reputation..." was so complicated that I had to count out the beats "1,2,3,4,1,2,3,4..." and play that back loudly in the headphones so that I could know where "1"was. It took heaps and heaps of 'takes' to get right.

- Ken's bass as always was integral to making the song work and come to life. All the little runs and licks that were then reinforced by Paul on Electric guitar. Brilliant!
